It is a story of a great chase, of a kingdom’s wild spirit, and of a silence that has haunted our woodlands for centuries.

The Cumbrian Legend: A Chase Through Time

The legend, retold and romanticised over the centuries by poets and storytellers, is set in the 14th century. At this time, the great forests of England were shrinking, and with them, the domain of the wolf. In the lands around Cartmel, a powerful landowner, Sir Edgar Harrington of Wraysholme Tower, had sworn an oath to eradicate the last of the wolves from his domain. As the story goes, only one remained—a great, grey wolf, cunning and elusive. To hasten its demise, Sir Edgar made a proclamation: the man who could slay this final wolf would win the hand of his beautiful niece in marriage. A great hunt was called, and the chase began. The pursuit was relentless, a desperate flight and a determined pursuit that raged across the landscape, from the Coniston Fells down past Windermere and south towards the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay.

One by one, the hunters fell away, their horses exhausted, until only two remained in pursuit of the desperate wolf. Finally, the chase cornered the creature on the windswept outcrop of Humphrey Head, a finger of land pointing out into the sea. There, among the rocks, the last wolf in England was finally slain. The victorious hunter, a mysterious knight, revealed himself to be none other than John Harrington, Sir Edgar’s own long-lost son, presumed dead in battle. The vow was fulfilled, the family reunited, and the couple were married.

The Myth as a Monument

This romantic, chivalrous tale has endured for over 600 years, its legacy preserved in the very fabric of Cumbria. In Cartmel Priory, the magnificent church that has stood for nearly a millennium, one can find the Harrington monument. At the feet of the knight and his lady lies the carved figure of a wolf, a permanent testament to the legend. High above, atop the Priory’s roof, a weathervane in the shape of a wolf’s head still turns in the wind, a silent guardian of the story. But it is worth pausing to consider why this romantic version of the story is the one that has survived. The historical reality was a grim and pragmatic one. Wolves were systematically exterminated from Britain, driven to extinction by deforestation and a bounty system designed to protect the expanding wool trade and its valuable livestock. It was a brutal process born of necessity and fear.

The legend, however, transforms this act of extirpation into a heroic founding myth. The death of a species is reframed as the dramatic climax of a noble quest. It is no longer a sad and quiet fading, but a spectacular event that forges a marriage, restores a family line, and brings order to the land. Perhaps the story is a monument not just to the wolf, but to our own need to find meaning and romance even in moments of profound ecological loss. It is a story we told ourselves to make peace with the silence that followed the last howl.

Capturing the Legend: The Story Behind the Art

It is this complex, layered story that we sought to honour with our new design. The image is not of a monster, but of a noble, solitary creature standing sentinel over its domain. The wolf stands proud, a symbol of the untamed soul of ancient Britain.

The design is framed within an ornate, circular border, reminiscent of a commemorative medallion or an ancient clan crest. It is a portrait of a legend.

In line with our creative promise, this design is a Whispered Legend. Today, a new and vital conversation is taking place. While the wolf's howl has been absent from England for centuries, it is returning to landscapes across Europe, and many are beginning to dream of its return to Britain. The debate around rewilding is complex, filled with both passionate hope and valid concerns, particularly from farming communities.

This design stands as a powerful symbol at the heart of that conversation. It is a memorial to what was lost, a reminder of the wildness that our island once held. But it is also a totem of hope for the future. It asks us to look at the wolf not as a villain from a fairy tale, but as a vital keystone species, a creature with the power to restore balance to our depleted ecosystems. It embodies the core Englandbear ethos to "Tread lightly, live gently" by challenging us to imagine a future where we might learn to live alongside these magnificent creatures once more. This piece of wearable art is an invitation to carry this story—in all its sorrow, romance, and future-facing hope—with you.
