On the desk are pans of watercolour paint, pencils, fine liners, and Englandbear studio merch." />

Throughout October, our workshop is gathering around a very special creative endeavour. My brother Dave—known to our circle as The Scriptorium Artist—has taken up the 31-day challenge of Inktober 2026. Rather than simply producing thirty-one ink sketches to meet a prompt list, Dave is setting out on a deeply personal journey of creative self-discovery: mastering the dance of negative space.

The Quest for Balance: When Less Whispers More

In our workshop discussions, Dave and I often talk about the delicate balance between character and setting. Dave possesses an extraordinary eye for atmospheric depth; he can easily spend days rendering every gnarled patch of oak bark, every blade of fen grass, and layered blankets of woodland mist. While magnificent, full backgrounds can occasionally compete with the spirit of the creature stepping forward. Conversely, in his traditional naturalist sketchpads, beloved figures like our Puddle Waddler or Scruffy Forager often sit completely alone against stark, empty white paper.

For Inktober 2026, Dave’s personal quest is discovering the sweet middle ground: learning when an impression is more powerful than a complete scene. By applying deliberate restraint, he is discovering how a simple hint of a cider barrel, a patch of grass, or an ancient stone allows a creature’s personality to truly sing—anchoring them in the land without crowding out their soul.

Every piece Dave crafts for this challenge is rooted firmly in British wildlife, traditional folklore, and historical whimsy. These are 100% original, hand-drawn ink illustrations From Our Sketchbook, created with traditional ink and dip pens right at his studio desk.

I will be updating this chronicle weekly as Dave completes each stage of his journey, giving you a quiet window into his sketchbook.

Week 1: The First Strokes

Day 1: Apple — Apple Bobbing Bam Bam

<img src="https://images.podos.io/for2yznut7py7jib2wz82pwon0kgptzyaeol6iq9oqg7qxpo.png.png?w=1140&project=england-bear-376237&v=2" alt="A black-and-white ink sketchbook drawing by The Scriptorium Artist for Inktober Day 1 (Apple). In British orchard heritage and All Hallows' Eve customs, apple bobbing was a light-hearted test of fortune, celebrating the harvest bounty of native windfalls (Malus domestica).

Here, Dave tackled his negative space goal with measured restraint: he provided just enough line work to set the scene—the wooden staves of the cider tub, the fairground bunting, and the canvas canopy flying the Englandbear pennant—without distracting from Bam Bam’s earnest, soaked grin.
