Discover the path that led our founder from a childhood love of books to the heart of the ancient woods, and how a search for forgotten folklore became Englandbear. This is the story of our Story-Keeper.

Hello, kindred spirit.

If you’re here, it’s because you’ve heard it too—a whisper on the wind, a sense of magic in the wild places, a feeling that the old stories haven’t quite faded away. My name is Bryony, and I’m the Story-Keeper for Englandbear. This is the story of the path that led me here, to this circle, with you.The first whispers I ever heard came not from the woods, but from the rustle of paper. My Mum, in an act of quiet magic I’m still grateful for, signed me up to a book club. Every month, a new book would arrive, a bundle of stories just for me. I remember the thrill of opening those packages, of stepping into a new world with every turned page. It was there, in the pages of those books, that a love for stories first took root in my heart.

That love grew alongside a deep connection to the natural world. At school, my projects were always about animals, so much so that my teachers would smile and say I might be the next David Attenborough. I didn’t know it then, but they were seeing a thread that would weave through my entire life: a fascination with the creatures who share our world and the tales they have to tell.My path, like many, took a winding turn. For sixteen years, I worked for the Ministry of Defence. It was a world away from folklore, yet it was there I learned the scaffolding of how to protect a place. In my final role, as the head of the Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainable Development Team, I learned the practical language of conservation, of protecting habitats and honouring the land. It was important work, but demanding. Whenever the stress became too much, I would seek out the woodlands. A walk among the trees was my way of coming home to myself, of recharging my energy and feeling grounded again. The woods were my sanctuary long before they became my workshop.

Eventually, I left the MOD to follow that pull towards the green world more formally, retraining with the Royal Horticultural Society. Achieving my Level 3 qualifications was like learning to listen to the land in a new language. I learned so much about the intricate lives of plants, how they communicate, and how to help them thrive. My hands were finally in the soil, and my connection to the earth deepened. But it was when I started my own family that the final piece of the story clicked into place. Reading to my children, I was enthralled by the power of a story well-told. I saw how it could ignite their imaginations, but also how it could teach them invaluable lessons about kindness, courage, and the world around them. I began to wonder, what stories could be found not just in books, but in the land itself?

This question led me to folklore. I discovered a treasure trove of tales woven into the British landscape, filled with wonderful morals and timeless wisdom. These weren't just stories; they were our history, our heritage. I felt a sudden, urgent need to keep them from being lost to time.

And so, Englandbear began. It started with a simple decision: to start telling those stories again, in the hopes that other kindred spirits and story-keepers would find me. It was a quiet call sent out into the world, a hope that there were others who still listened for the whispers in the woods and believed in the magic of our shared history.

Seeing you here, reading these words, tells me that call was answered.
